This site has been established to document the history of the Nga Manu Nature Reserve, which is located just north of Waikanae, on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand. It stems from a desire of Peter McKenzie, one of the original founders, and the primary inspiration and driving force behind the development of the Reserve, to document the history of this important place for perpetuity. However, departing from the family tradition established by his father, Sir Roy McKenzie, who was a prolific writer of “traditional” books, Peter did not want this to be book of the “paper and cardboard” kind. He wanted it to be a “living history” that can be viewed and contributed to by anyone with an interest – one which can develop in a fluid and dynamic way. For this reason, it was decided that a website forum, to which
readers can freely comment and contribute (otherwise known as a blog), would be the optimal forum for this project. This history will be divided into “chapters” which will correspond with chronological segments of the Nga Manu’s history. The project was launched in January 2010, and will be rolled out, chapter by chapter, over the coming months.

Great to see this history project is underway. I like the format and look forward to getting further chapters.
Thank you so much for charting the history of such a wonderful dream and legacy. From a conversation, planted a seed that has blossomed into this unique place – Nga Manu. To all the hearts, hands and minds who have come together – lead by a kindered spirit, and some shear Kiwi determination, I would like to thank you for all that you have done as a family/ community. It is a model to follow – faith, trust and unity.
I too have a vision premised upon another precious remnant, Wairakau Rongoaa here in Kapiti (NZ Natives – Maori traditional herbal medicines). My family visited Nga Manu today and was absolutely blown away with its growth and the amount of Wairakau Rongoaa that is growing there. We also loved the education centre. The visit was inspirational.
Having read the full story tonight, I am extremely motivated to continue this journey. The collective model that we are building and the arrival of the right ‘guides’ has been not to dissimilar to what you’ve all experienced. We are currently awaiting for the ‘right place and space’ to arrive, as you did also. I am resolved to follow your lead, if we believe in it, the right place will arrive. Once again, thank you for the story. It has resonated in more ways than you can imagine.
We look forward to our next visit and may be in touch about hireage options for the education centre in the future.
